A COVID-19 Special: Combatting Fake News on Social Media in Times of Crisis

Social media has become an essential and primary source of information and often a substitute for traditional news sources. The current media landscape is witnessing unprecedented polarisation and social media platforms are fuelled by a vast amount of information, both true and false, and this can very often be misleading. Fabricated information increases discrimination and creates religious, ethnic, political, and sectarian divisions, as well as encouraging hate speech.

The manipulation of information represents a huge risk that might have catastrophic effects on societies in the Arab region in particular, triggering possible conflicts and creating further tensions among people and different communities.

This webinar will examine the best practices for tackling misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, stressing the importance of fact-checking in preventing and defusing tensions within and between communities. Participants will learn about the techniques and tools that contribute to reporting news in a more balanced, transparent and accurate manner and will highlight the role of youth in combatting fake news on social media platforms.

SPEAKERS

Mahmoud Ghazayel

A Lebanese journalist who graduated from the Faculty of Media at the Lebanese University. Mahmoud worked as a reporter and news editor in a number of media companies, including Al-Hayat, the pan-Arab newspaper from Beirut. He contributed to the creation and development of several groups that are specialised in verifying news content in different Arab countries. Later in 2014, Mahmoud moved to the UAE to work as an editor for "24 Media Studies" institution. From there, he continues the course of training students, journalists, and people who are interested in developing their abilities in news gathering from social media platforms, and expanding their skills in verifying false information. He has participated in a number of Arab and foreign media conferences and has published technical reports and media research in specialised outlets and daily newspapers.

محمود غزيّل صحافي لبناني متخرج من كليّة الإعلام في الجامعة اللبنانية، عمل مراسلاً ومحرراً في عدد من المؤسسات الإعلامية، من بينها صحيفة "الحياة" من بيروت. ساهم في إنشاء وتطوير مجموعات تعمل على التحقق من المحتوى في عدد من البلدان العربية. انتقل في 2014 للعمل في مجال التحرير لدى مؤسسة "24 للدراسات الإعلامية" بدولة الإمارات، ومن هناك يزال يتابع مسار تدريب الطلاب والكوادر الإعلامية على تنمية مهارات جمع الأخبار من منصات التواصل الإجتماعي وكيفية التحقق من الأخبار المغلوطة. له مشاركات في مؤتمرات إعلامية عربية وأجنبية ونشرت له تقارير تقنية وبحوث إعلامية في منصات إعلامية متخصصة وصحف يومية.

Bissane El-Cheikh

Bissane El-Cheikh is a Lebanese Journalist and writer, based in Istanbul. She is an Executive Editor with “ARIJ”, Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism Between 2001 and 2018. El-Cheikh worked with the London based "Al-Hayat" newspaper, as a field reporter specialising in in-depth coverage and investigative journalism, then as a political columnist. She covered wars and conflicts in Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria and carried out special coverage and interviews in the Arab region in addition to being the editor-in-chief of the weekly "Youth" supplement, which highlighted youth and education issues in the Arab world. She is the co-author of the book "Shu'ub al Sha'ab al Lubnani" (The Many Peoples of the Lebanese People), Al Saqi, (2014) along with Hazem Saghieh. Since 2007, El- Cheikh has worked as a media trainer and consultant with local and international organizations, and she is a member of the “International Consortium for Investigative Journalists” (ICIJ).

بيسان الشيخ صحافية وكاتبة لبنانية مقيمة في اسطنبول عضو هيئة تحرير شبكة "أريج" للصحافة الاستقصائية عملت في صحيفة "الحياة" اللندنية بين 2001 و 2018 كمراسلة ميدانية متخصصة في التغطيات المعمقة والتحقيقات الاستقصائية, ثم كاتبة مقال سياسي. غطت الحروب والنزاعات في العراق ولبنان وسوريا وأنجزت تغطيات ومقابلات خاصة في المنطقة العربية بالاضافة الى كونها كانت سكرتيرة تحرير ملحق "شباب" الاسبوعي, الذي أبرز قضايا الشباب والتعليم في العالم العربي. صدر لها بالاشتراك مع حازم صاغيه كتاب "شعوب الشعب اللبناني: مدن الطوائف وتحولاتها في زمن الحرب السورية", الساقي, 2014 منذ 2007 تعمل الشيخ ايضاً في مجال الاستشارات الاعلامية والتدريب الصحافي لدى منظمات عربية ودولية وهي عضو في الشبكة الدولية للصحافة الاستقصائية.

Maya Sukar

Maya Sukar is the Capacity Building Officer for the Arab Region Programme, based in Lebanon. Sukar was a consultant and trainer for different international and local organizations on political skills, political communication, policy advocacy, minority rights and pluralism. She trained a number of parliamentary candidates, civil society activists, youth and women all over the Arab Region. Also, she worked closely with MPs and Ministers on several public policy issues in coordination with different stakeholders, and designed and implemented a series of workshops and events bringing together officials, CSOs, and experts tackling public policy issues and human rights.

مايا سكر: مايا مسؤولة عن بناء القدرات في برنامج المنطقة العربية، مقيمية في لبنان. عملت كمستشارة ومدربة لعدد من المنظمات الدولية والمحلية حول المهارات السياسية، التواصل السياسي، إعداد السياسات والمدافعة من أجل تبنيها، حقوق الأقليات في القانون الدولي والتعددية. دربت عدد من المرشحين للانتخابات المحلية والنيابية، ناشطين في منظمات المجتمع المدن، نساء ناشطات وشباب من مختلف الدول العربية. كما عملت ايضاً مع نواب ووزراء لبنانيين حول مواضيع تتعلق بالسياسات العامة ونظمت العديد من الورش العمل والنشاطات تجمع مختلف اصحاب الشأن من مجمتع مدني، منظمات غير حكومية، أكاديميين، خبراء ومسؤولين سياسيين حول مسائل اجتماعية وسياسية عدة.
